The first operational carrier-based unmanned aircraft in the world is being tested by the Navy

Image
The government team, along with industry partners Boeing and Lockheed Martin, conducted a demonstration aboard the carrier with both ground control system (GCS) and aircraft to evaluate the MQ-25 system’s integration into the carrier environment. “There is no better way to determine the success of a carrier aircraft design and its integration into the air wing then to put that new aircraft through testing at sea,” said Capt. Chad Reed, Unmanned Carrier Aviation program manager. “I am extremely proud of our team for the stellar execution of both engine and aircraft tests, as well as the approaches flown in a surrogate aircraft.  It’s an exciting time as we progress toward the air wing of the future.” During the in-port portion of the UCAD, Lockheed Martin installed the prototype MD-5 ground control station in the Unmanned Aviation Warfare Center (UAWC), the CVN-based control room.  The team specifically demonstrated the functionality of the GCS to the MQ-25 fleet integrati

What Takes Place When an Arresting Cable Breaks on US Aircraft Carriers?

Image
Aircraft carriers are some of the most formidable vessels in the world. They are the most powerful ships in the fleet, equipped with a wide array of weapons and advanced Technology . However, with such power comes great responsibility, and the crew must always be vigilant to ensure the safety of everyone on board. One of the most critical components of an aircraft carrier is the arresting gear system, which is responsible for stopping aircraft as they land on the ship’s deck. The system consists of a series of cables that are attached to an aircraft’s tailhook. When the plane lands on the carrier, the cables engage the tailhook and slow down the aircraft, bringing it to a stop in just a few seconds. But what happens when an arresting cable breaks? The consequences can be severe, both for the aircraft and the crew on board the carrier. The first thing that occurs is that the aircraft loses its ability to stop suddenly, and it must rely on its own braking systems to slow do

Astonishment at the sixth generation fighter’s appearance

Drone, fighter jet, and helicopter, all in one – this is the future of American VTOL helicopters. At a time when world powers must be even more powerful, no Military asset can afford to not be useful in virtually every mission. As a result, traditional helicopters must now make way for a more advanced type of aircraft known as Tiltrotors. They fly faster, farther, and most importantly, they have better VTOL agility. To understand the importance of VTOL in tiltrotors, it is important to know how it works. A welcomed sight on the skies above Commonwealth armies, the Kshatriya gunship is able to unleash a wide range of firepower as it soars the skies at full speed, then retreats before what remains of the foe can even aim. Speed, as it happens with the Scimitar MK3 mech, is a key factor when it comes to the gunship’s chances of survival. Aside from small arms fire, the Kshatriya is quite vulnerable, its armor plate and shielding systems unable to handle concentrated anti

When Needed, a Cheap and Versatile Fighter, Northrop F-5E Tiger II

Image
Born at the same time as the famous Soviet MiG-21 fighter, the Northrop F-5 has proven to be a platform with impressive performance, low cost, and low maintenance costs. Though primarily designed for a day air superiority role, the aircraft is also a capable ground-attack platform, making it a popular export aircraft. The F-5E Tiger II is a deeply upgraded version of Northrop Corporation’s fighter line. Its combat capability was evaluated by Soviet experts as superior to MiG-21 and even stronger than MiG-23. The F-5 entered service in 1962, born as a cost-effective fighter for the Navy and later the Air Force. It’s a small, highly aerodynamic fighter, built around two compact and high-thrust General Electric J85 engines, focusing on performance and a low cost of maintenance. Smaller and simpler than contemporaries such as the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-5E Tiger II is the second generation of this fighter, introduced in 1970. This upgrade included more power

The Eurocopter Tiger, the most powerful assault helicopter, is the dominant force in western Europe

Image
The Eurocopter Tiger, a joint effort between France and Germany and produced by Eurocopter, is widely regarded as the most potent design for attack helicopters in Western Europe. It was in the latter part of the twentieth century that attack helicopters really came into their own; “armed to the teeth,” these machines could do almost anything on the battlefield. They started to be replaced. Tiger’s development began during the cold wαr. In 1984, the governments of France and West Germany demanded an advanced multipurpose battlefield helicopter. It was intended to be an anti-tank helicopter platform used to counter a potential Soviet land invasion into Western Europe. The long development period, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the financial difficulties caused the project seem to be collapse. There have been calculations that the US-made McDonnell Douglas AH-64 Apache attack helicopter would be a significantly cheaper alternative than developing an entirely new hel

The top-secret American spacecraft X-37B has returned to Earth after an unprecedented 908 days in orbit

Image
What did the X-37B perform in orbit for longer than its previous record of two years? The X-37B landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 12 November after 908 days in orbit Boeing/U.S. Space Force The secretive X-37B space plane has beaten its previous flight duration record by staying in orbit for 908 days before landing. The autonomous craft, operated by the United States Space Force (USSF), is officially classified and therefore scant details about its purpose or missions are released, but officials say that the latest flight carried a host of scientific experiments. The X-37 Orbital Test Vehicle (OTV) began life under the umbrella of NASA, but was passed to the US military, which created the X-37B variant. That model first flew in orbit in 2010 and the two vehicles constructed so far have carried out increasingly lengthy flights, including a 674-day mission that ended in 2014. Its latest 908-day mission sets a new record for the craft, although many othe

Each of the ship in the Ford-class will save $4b in total ownership costs during its 50-year service life. An  aircraft carrier  is a warship which serves as a seagoing airbase. It is a symbol of prestige and power for the navies across the world . These giant aircraft carrier s are equipped with a full-length flight deck capable of carrying, arming, deploying, and recovering aircraft s. Acting as the capital ship of a naval fleet in a waterfront, these supercarrier can carry numerous aircraft including fighters Jets, strike aircraft, helicopters, and other types of aircraft. As of 2021, there are an estimated 46 aircraft/helicopter carriers in service operated by thirteen navies across the world, and the largest of them is the U.S Navy’s Gerald R Ford Class battleships. The first carrier in Ford Class, the USS Gerald R. Ford, was named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford. It was commissioned by President Donald Trump on 22 July 2017.

Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, one of the largest Military transport aircraft in the world today. The first fɩіɡһt was made on June 30, 1968, the C-5 Galaxy continues to be trusted, the US Air foгсe even plans to maintain it until 2040. C-5 Galaxy began service with the US Air foгсe in 1969, it was present in the wars in Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. . The C-5 Galaxy project began in 1961, in an effort to create a heavy jet transport that would replace the Douglas C-133 Cargomaster and complement the Lockheed C-141 Starlifters. The result was an aircraft with a maximum payload of 118 tons and can carry it to a range of 5,526 km. The range can be extended by in-fɩіɡһt refueling. However during wartime a maximum payload of 132 t is allowed. When introduced in 1970, the C-5 Galaxy became the largest aircraft in the world and remains one of the largest today. This aircraft can carry two M1A2 Abrams main Ьаttɩe tanks, 10 LAV-25 armored reconnaissance vehicles, 16 HMMWVs,

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was undoubtedly one of the most adaptable airframes ever used by the U.S. Armed Forces

Image
During a four-decade service run, the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps all operated the Phantom – an all-weather, supersonic fighter, bomber, and interceptor. The Phantom’s adaptability, paired with its commendable, and consistent performance attributed to the fighter earning a ceremonious distinction: the F-4, with 5,195 units built, is the most produced American supersonic Military aircraft ever. Image Flying Strong and Setting Records Taking flight in 1958, the Phantom was an envelope-pusher, setting 16 different performance records, including for speed and altitude. The Phantom was well ahead of its time – its speed record remained unbeaten until 1975, when the still-serving F-15 Eagle, with its 50,000 pounds of thrust, set a new mark. With a top speed of Mach 2.2, the Phantom is quite fast – “Speed is life” was the motto of Phantom pilots – which is remarkable given the Phantom’s brawny dimensions and hulking weight. Measuring 63 feet long, with

The Me 323 was once an amazing German aeronautical achievement

Huge, heavy and medium speed, but the Me 323 was expected to help the Nazis land in England in the early stages of the wᴀʀ, but things were not what the Berlin generals thought. With a payload of 43 tons, the Me 323 was an amazing aviation achievement of its time, but unfortunately it was not successful on the battlefield. Image Born in 1941, the Nazi super-heavy transport aircraft, the Messerschmitt Me 323 is considered the largest transport aircraft ever used in World wᴀʀ II. The Me 323 was designed to carry heavy cargo such as tanks, armored vehicles,… across the strait to attack Britain during Operation Sealion. However, because the Luftwaffe could not control the skies, Operation Sealion never took place and the aircraft was only produced from 1941 to 1942 before being “abandoned” with the campaign against Britain. Nobody expected this massive Boeing B-52 Stratofortress airplane to fly for such a long time

Interesting, and good to know that old planes can be reused, improved, maintained. You do not mention whether engines are improved. And also, “maintenance-friendly” if that is the case is enormously cost-effective – but only if the design is done with maintenance in mind. I worked on those old B-52H model aircraft at my first duty station and it was cold in Minot, North Dakota and the weather was too cold in Winter and too hot in Summer. Later on I worked on the D and G models at U-tapao TNAS, Thailand, and Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. I am surprised that they have flown so long and still kept up. The older models was destroyed leaving just enough to complete the missions assigned to them. I read about this event that happened in the 1980’s. A group of officials were driven to somewhere in a North African desert. A B-52 had left its Texas base 10(?) hours earlier, flew to near where the officials were located, dropped its bomb load and flew back to Texas non-stop. One of th

Here is a video of the fastest fighter jet in the world in action in 2030

Image
There is always something special with supersonic aircraft. The speed and raw tenacity fighter jets have while in action is something to behold. Fighter jets depend on speed for survival. If your craft doesn’t move as fast as the enemy’s, there can be grave consequences. After World War 2, a race of manufacturing the world ’s best war weapons took place between the United States and Russia. In the case of manufacturing the fighter jets, there were two main objectives to achieve. The first aim was to increase the speed and the second was the development of stealth technologies. There is an opinion that the soviet aircraft designers were more successful in the high-speed performance to release the fastest fighter plane possible. While the American aircraft manufacturers became the best in stealth Technology . But is it true? This extraordinary effort by the US, which attempted the most daring landing ever on an aircraft carrier, has me speechless and in amazement

Image
Landing a 4 engine STOL onto a super carrier was a huge achievement. But I don’t think this was the most dапɡeгoᴜѕ carrier landing . Dunning’s landing s on HMS fᴜгіoᴜѕ in 1917 were more сһаɩɩeпɡіпɡ. Eric Brown’s landing of a twin engined Mosquito onto a tiny escort carrier was also more dапɡeгoᴜѕ. But if the Hurcules landing had gone wгoпɡ, there would have been an order of magnitude more сагпаɡe. The guy who landed the C-130 on the Forrestal was actually an F-4 Phantom pilot. It was decided that it would be easier to teach a Phantom pilot with lots of carrier tгар experience to fly a Herky bird than to teach a Herky Bird pilot with no carrier experience to tгар on an aircraft carrier! Video’s never do justice to the size of an aircraft carrier . Not until you have been on the fɩіɡһt deck during fɩіɡһt ops, can you truly appreciated them. I have had the honor of serving on board the U.S.S. America for a couple years. The first traps that I witnessed, I was ѕсагed to

The Spruce Goose’s inaugural flight took place 75 years ago, and it never took off again

Image
The year 2022 was significant for a number of important anniversaries. Naturally, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the BMW M division. However, there is one more event that is worth commemorating, and that is the 75th anniversary of the maiden flight of the Hughes H-4 Hercules, which was also the aircraft’s sole flight. More often referred to as the Spruce Goose. Mr. Howard Hughes and the Hughes Aircraft Company were responsible for the construction of the Spruce Goose, which holds the record for being the biggest flying boat that has ever been constructed and is also among the largest aircraft that have ever been constructed in the history of aviation. Hughes has long been regarded as one of the most interesting personalities in the History of aviation, and the creation of the Spruce Goose is often regarded as the crowning accomplishment of his aviation career. However, this unique aircraft, which was once conceived of as a massive Military heavy transporter, wa
