Image
The RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance, remotely piloted aircraft with an integrated sensor suite that provides global all-weather, day or night intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability.       In the RQ-4 name, the “R” is the Department of Defense designation for Reconnaissance and “Q” means unmanned aircraft system. The “4” refers to the series of purpose-built remotely piloted aircraft systems. How Much Does an RQ-4 Global Hawk Cost? In accordance with Lea Greene, the chief of public affairs at Grand Forks Air Force Base, the “base” model of the RQ-4 Global Hawk costs around $99 million. Furthermore, the latest Block 40 version adds another $30 million for sensors and other equipment. So, a Block 40 RQ-4 Global Hawk costs up to $130 million. Is the Global Hawk Stealth? The RQ-4 Global Hawk is stealthy, but the Air Force has plans to move forward with a replacement UAV called the RQ-180. The RQ-4 Global Hawk took its ...

Introducing the RQ-4 Global Hawk, America’s largest unmanned aerial vehicle

Image
The RQ-4 Global Hawk is the largest Military UAV. Having a wingspan of just over 130 feet, a length of 47.6 feet, and a total weight of 14,950 pounds, this UAV has tons to offer. Let’s investigate what the RQ4 is all about. What Does the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk Do? Present in the name, RQ-4, the designation of the letter “R” by the Department of Defense signifies reconnaissance, and the “Q” stands for unmanned aircraft system. The number 4 represents the series of purpose-built remotely piloted aircraft systems. Produced by Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and L3Harris, the RQ-4 drone functions primarily as a high-altitude, long-endurance, and remotely piloted surveillance aircraft. Its integrated sensor suite supplies global all-weather day or night intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. As with most UAVs, the Global Hawk’s mission is to issue a broad spectrum of ISR collection information to support joint combatant forces in peacetim...

The first operational carrier-based unmanned aircraft in the world is being tested by the Navy

The government team, along with industry partners Boeing and Lockheed Martin, conducted a demonstration aboard the carrier with both ground control system (GCS) and aircraft to evaluate the MQ-25 system’s integration into the carrier environment. “There is no better way to determine the success of a carrier aircraft design and its integration into the air wing then to put that new aircraft through testing at sea,” said Capt. Chad Reed, Unmanned Carrier Aviation program manager. “I am extremely proud of our team for the stellar execution of both engine and aircraft tests, as well as the approaches flown in a surrogate aircraft.  It’s an exciting time as we progress toward the air wing of the future.” During the in-port portion of the UCAD, Lockheed Martin installed the prototype MD-5 ground control station in the Unmanned Aviation Warfare Center (UAWC), the CVN-based control room.  The team specifically demonstrated the functionality of the GCS to the MQ-25 fleet integrati...
