Today’s NHL Prop Picks and Best Bets - Saturday, January 13

With plenty of eyes on the NFL playoff markets, bettors might find some more inefficient NHL player props on the ice today, and I've dug through the slate to find my favorite three.

Today, I'm riding one of the best and most profitable trends in the NHL odds recently, hitting a guy playing big minutes with Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh, and getting on the Sharks in an uncommon decent spot on offense.

Here are my best NHL picks for player props for Saturday, January 13.

  • Rickard Rakell Over 0.5 points (-130 at Bet99)

Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets

Prop bet #1: Jets streaming

The Winnipeg Jets have been the NHL's best defensive team since Halloween. They have held their opponent to three or fewer goals in an amazing 29 straight games. They have held their opponents to Under three goals in regulation in an incredible 19 straight games. Finally, they have held their opponents to Under 2.5 goals in a perfect 11 straight contests and are paying -120 to do it again tonight vs. a Philadelphia Flyers team on the tail-end of a traveling back-to-back and is struggling to score.

This Under 2.5 at -140 or better vs. the Jets is an auto-bet for me right now. They have moved up to be one of the Stanley Cup odds favorites in some places and have become one of the deepest teams in hockey this year. Nobody can compete four lines deep with this team and the tandem goaltending they are getting with Connor Hellebuyck and Laurent Brossoit is making the auto-bet easy as bettors don’t need to wait for a goalie confirmation because they're both playing great.

The matchup for the Jets tonight is also perfect. Philadelphia went into last night’s Game vs. the Wild having scored just 14 regulation goals over its last seven Games. Since December 1, they rank 27th in expected goals for/60 at even strength and have the league's worst power play over that stretch at 12.1%.

This is an easy Under here with a short total of 5.5. The form is great and the matchup is about as good as it gets. I have a lot of confidence in this play tonight.

Flyers' team total prop: Under 2.5 (-120 at Bet99)

Prop bet #2: Reaping Rickard's rewards

The Pittsburgh Penguins have not been a profitable Over team this year at 15-22-3 O/U. The offense is scoring fewer than 3.0 goals per Game since December 1 which puts them in the Bottom 12 of the league, but there could be some positive regression coming and tonight’s matchup might be the tipping point.

The Penguins rank fifth in hockey in expected goals for/60 at even strength since December 1 but 25th in shooting percentage and 24th on the power play. A matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes might sound like a tough task, but No. 1 netminder Pyotr Kochetkov is out and it will be Antti Raanta in net for the Hurricanes, which is good news for Pittsburgh’s offense.

Raanta’s .867 SV% is brutal and Pittsburgh doesn’t need a lot of volume to score on a goalie who was waived and unclaimed just last month. The Canes are 11-5 to the Over across his 16 starts this year and only three of Raanta’s starts have seen fewer than six total goals scored.

There are a few ways to approach this matchup, which include the Penguins team total Over 2.5 at -150 and the full game Over 6.5 at -110. But one player prop on the Pens is standing out, and that’s the Rickard Rakell odds on Over 0.5 points at -130.

He’s playing on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel (who both have point totals of 1.5), has 10 points in his last 11 games since returning from injury, and has pointed in eight of those matches. He has also seen a big bump in his ice time, which averages 17:11 on the season but 20:35 over his last six games.

That jump in ice time and his better scoring opportunities playing with a Crosby who can’t be stopped right now should have Rakell shorter than -150.

There are two levels of value here: one with Raanta being one of the worst goalies in the league, and the other being Rakell's increased opportunities. His two-plus points are in play here as well.

Rickard Rakell prop: Over 0.5 points (-130 at Bet99)

Prop bet #3: Elevated Eklund

This afternoon is a great time to hop on some San Jose Sharks player props which is something that I’ve seldom said this season. The Ottawa Senators are down a forward in Josh Norris and the team is going to roll with 11 forwards and seven D-men. It’s not easy to play with seven defensemen and it's something players don’t enjoy doing as there isn’t a lot of consistency with partners and ice time can fluctuate.

Ottawa also lost starting goalie Anton Forsberg to injury and will likely start Joonas Korpisalo (3.69 GAA, .887 SV%). No. 3 Mads Sogard could also get the start vs. San Jose, who not many teams respect.

That could come back to bite the Senators today as they are nothing to write home about themselves. Since December 1, they have the No. 31 penalty kill, allow 3.85 goals per Game (29th), and are 6-14 SU, which isn’t far off San Jose's 5-14 SU mark over the same stretch.

The Sharks have a great power-play matchup vs. a bad Ottawa PK, and William Eklund has jumped up to the top unit. He is also playing his 5-on-5 with Mikael Granlund, who has quietly put up 21 points over his last 19 games with points in 13 of those.

Granlund’s -140 price for a point is decent but the +125 William Eklund odds are the better value with the same opportunities.

San Jose is a live dog in this afternoon game at +200 and Eklund should continue to benefit with a great opportunity vs. a weak opponent that might be overvalued in this spot. The +125 odds are also the best on the board.

William Eklund prop: Over 0.5 points (+125 at Bet99)
